    Personal statement: have a general, master statement that you can tweak for different programs. Try to find a way to mention what in the program (in concrete, specific ways) will help you achieve your goals. If you're applying to different kinds of programs, tweak the statement to reflect that. Bottom line: make sure to make the case for why that program is a good fit.
    personal statement: I worked through undergrad (work study). My undergrad adviser encouraged me to highlight as much in my personal statement as it might set me apart (and maybe take the place of other students' volunteer experience, for which I had limited time).
    Master of Public Policy (MPP) degree program essays: If you are considering applying to MPP programs (specifically UC Berkeley's Goldman School of Public Policy), the Students of Color in Public Policy, a student group at UC Berkeley, offers a Peer Advising Program that matches prospective student applicants with current MPP students, to read through the Statement of Purpose and answer application questions.     We'd need one on choosing a school, then choosing where to live, examining police brutality, hate crimes as well as climate on campus.

    As much as impostor syndrome would need to be addressed, so too consciousness and perspective on our tokenization both in our programs as well as on the market. What signs to look for regarding tokenization and how to navigate it for our 'benefit.'
    Similarly, how to make friends based on similar social locations to learn from each other and support one another in being one of a few.

    It's hard to believe that it's been over a year since this wiki grew, almost fully formed, and I want to thank everyone who has contributed, shared it, talked about it, and used the ideas and awareness here to better practices with graduate students.
    I am proud of every one who has contributed, and hope that people will continue to add to it, especially POC, LGBTQ+, and our most vulnerable populations.
    In the last year, more and more people in various fields have realized that we need to talk more about the issues of class in regards to grad students and the graduate school experience. I know there are several edited collections in various stages of completion that address some of these issues, and that more and more people are incorporating class and grad school into conference presentations and syllabus. If you come across these resources, please share them to our resource page!
    Remember too, we have the sister pages of Dear Bob: Advice for Graduate Advisors and the TA Resource Manual for Teaching.
    I hope you all will continue to contribute here, sharing resources, and experiences.

    I have blogged and tweeted a lot during my PhD experience about the ways my (self-identified) socio-economic, and cultural status has affected me and my experience in a thousand different ways. From not understanding social norms, to not getting jokes or references, to feeling like I was constantly playing catch-up, these issues have impacted my PhD studies and my professionalization.

    Some schools and programs may offer only Research Assistantships. If you are interested in being a teacher, and getting a job anywhere beyond a top-tier research school, make sure you have the opportunity to get some teaching experience.
    Once in your program, find out about the variety of assistantships available. My program, for example, had one for a grad student to run the office that advised the department’s undergraduate majors. Having a variety of academic work experience can help in the job search, especially if you are in a highly competitive field and are looking for jobs at schools where teaching and student interaction are more important than scholarship. The experience can also make transitioning to an academic job easier.
    What you've been taught about showing respect to instructors and appropriate classroom behavior is not likely to be the attitude your students will have in the classroom, particularly if you are teaching students at a private university or a top public institution. Be emotionally prepared for rudeness, privileged weirdness, and any number of stunts you could have never imagined pulling as a scholarship-dependent undergraduate. A bad grade might have made you study harder, they might have their parent to email the dean (or email her themselves).
    Think about teaching as a performance and your students as your audience--this will matter if your eligibility for TAships is tied to your teaching evaluations. Smile often. Come to class in a good mood or fake being in a good mood every single day. Make jokes. Make pop culture references. A faculty mentor who came from a poor background taught me this and it has been golden for teaching large required courses that tackle contentious issues (gender studies, social sciences).

    What teaching assistantships cover, what they don’t:
    Find out how many years of guaranteed funding your offer includes, and how that funding will be apportioned. Some programs reduce funding levels for students after they pass their PhD qualifying exams. Others pull funding entirely. You can negotiate your funding offer (in some places). Use the different offers you have on the table (if you have multiple offers) to get another program to offer you something comparable.

    Check with your undergrad institution (and your department) - some programs will pay for your GRE.
    Princeton Review puts out a book with the words that appear most often on the GRE - it doesn’t change a huge amount, so getting one a few years old works fine - go through this and make flashcards for the words you don’t know.

    Double check that all of your programs actually require the GRE. Some graduate programs in some fields are moving towards making this optional. Many universities are circulating memos to admissions committees that GREs are both poor predictors of grad performance and that they are biased against minorities.

    Addressing Selection Criteria

    ManyTalk to your spouse or significant other or kids (as applicable) BEFORE starting your job search. Identify places you as a family are or are not willing to live. I have heard horror stories of faculty accepting a position that led to a divorce or retracting an acceptance. Don't waste your time applying to a school in a place you can't stand to live. Your sanity and well being are more important.
    Recognize that schools generally start the hiring cycle up to a year in advance and this process is long. So a phone interview in July this year may lead to an on-campus visit in September, with an offer in December for a position that starts in August next year. Start job hunting as soon as you can reasonably prove your defense will be successful. This is a key thing to show in your application materials. Article on How to Prepare for the Job Market by Firth, Germonprez, and Thatcher (2014).
    I highly recommend HigherEdJobs.com to source academic jobs. It has its limits, because it batches data from multiple sources. Set up alerts to be notified of new postings that match your interests. Find out if your academic society has a listserv and sign up for that. Jobs often get posted on the listservs because they're free advertising. (Check settings for Daily Digest.) If there's a specific school you like, set up alerts on their job board. Some state schools have specific hoops you have to jump through to apply for jobs. For example, Georgia has a clearing house website. The plus side is, once you sign up for an account, if a school posts a job that matches your credentials, the school is required to notify you of the opening.

    Really, truly consider non-academic options in addition to academic ones. Academic jobs are incredibly hard to come by and regardless of the quality of your research and teaching--it doesn’t always work out simply due to dumb luck. Seriously consider and do some preparation for non-academic careers. While those in the hard sciences and engineering may be able to more easily envision the transition to the private sector, there are great opportunities for those in humanities and social sciences too. Consider things like consulting, /state/local government agencies, higher ed administration, non-profits, international organizations … there are a lot and they can be incredibly interesting and fulfilling, without much of the existential angst that Assistant Professors seem to face.
    The cost of moving, something you will likely have to do often in this profession.

    If you teach, you might be able to request desk copies of books--if you teach courses in your specific field of study, all the better. Check with dept admin, and make contacts with local book representatives from various publishers. Some press, like Oxford, will allow you to contact directly to request desk copies. This is easier than it sounds. Often you can just go to the publisher website and request a desk copy. You’ll have to say what class you’re considering it for and, later, if you will be ordering it for that class. OK this with your advisor. You can also get in contact with the sales rep for your area and s/he will send you the books. The department administrative assistant may know the sales reps for major publishers your department works with, check in with him/her; otherwise you can do a search on the publisher’s website for your local rep and contact him/her that way.
    Go digital. This ties in with the cost of bookshelves and moving. It is not easy to move with boxes of books. Check if your university holds digital copies. If not, google the book. Some authors and professors believe in free and open software and sharing of knowledge. Get on your VPN and search Google Scholar, Research Gate, Academia.edu. Many entire books are available in PDF.
    If you're teaching or TA'ing a class and can get your .edu school account verified to view instructor materials, you can access textbooks for free on Vitalsource. Click here to check if your email will work.
    Have you checked to see if Inter Library Loan has your book? They probably do… but make your request early as you may be competing with other students for your library / interlibrary loan copies
    At the start of each semester, I would get the syllabi and put the readings in my calendar on the days I would need to request them through ILL (or BorrowDirect for some) to get it in time for class.
